Israel cuts utilities to UNRWA facilities in East Jerusalem

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities begin implementing measures on Tuesday aimed at cutting electricity and water supplies to facilities run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in occupied East Jerusalem, according to statements by Palestinian officials.

The Jerusalem Governorate says Israeli authorities start issuing official notices in preparation for enforcing the decision, describing the move as “a new escalation” directed at UNRWA’s presence and institutions in the city.

According to the statement, Israel’s electricity provider delivers notices ordering the disconnection of power to UNRWA buildings located within the separation barrier, with the cutoff scheduled to take effect after a 15-day period.

The steps are carried out under a law passed by Israel’s parliament on Dec. 31, 2025.

Separately, Israel’s water company sends notices instructing the suspension of water services to properties used by the UN agency in occupied East Jerusalem, the governorate says.

An initial assessment indicates that the measures impact 10 UNRWA facilities, including schools, medical clinics, vocational training centers, and administrative offices. Among the affected sites is the agency’s main headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, according to the statement.

Palestinian authorities warn that enforcing these measures would severely disrupt education, healthcare, and relief services provided to Palestinian refugees in East Jerusalem.

Israel’s parliament gives final approval to the legislation last month during its second and third readings, passing it with a vote of 59 in favor and seven against.

UNRWA states that around 48,000 children are enrolled in its schools across the occupied West Bank.

Israeli authorities have previously taken comparable actions targeting the UN agency, according to reports.
